Question by Sandra R: Why won’t companies hire the developmentally disabled adults?
I am a 46 year old female. I am disabled, my disability is a hidden disability – Autism Spectrum Disorder. I work at what they would call a sheltered workshop for the handicapped. I want a job out in the community but it doesn’t seem like companies want to hire the developmentally disabled. Why ??? We want to work !!!

Maybe it’s not the kind of job you want (?), but I know walmart will hire disabled people.

It is estimated that there are more than 4.5 million Americans with developmental disabilities. Many of these people have severely debilitating conditions, but there are several others who would greatly benefit from those providing employment for adults with developmental disabilities.

Developmental disabilities are a diverse collection of mild to severe conditions that impair mental and/or physical abilities. Mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy, and Down syndrome are four of the most common forms. With some understanding, businesses can find ways to accommodate to their needs and provide employment for adults with developmental disabilities.

Any job they can do is a job for them. But I often see mentally handicapped people as baggers at grocery stores.
